Requisition ID: req34372 Working Title: Reading Tutor Pay: $16.50 hourly Campus: Main - Albuquerque, NM Department: Civic Engagement (454D) Employment Type: Student Employment Student Type: Work-Study Status: Non-Exempt Background Check Required: Yes For Best Consideration Date: 9/1/2025 Position Summary The reading tutor will be working primarily but not limited to pre‑literacy children, typically 3rd grade and under. This position supports Global Give‑A‑Book's mission of promoting youth literacy by providing award‑winning books to children in need. The tutor will read books to children and facilitate a reading session, encouraging them to read and allowing them to take a book home. Responsibilities Implement a small‑group early literacy curriculum. Read to children in settings of ten or more children. Keep and maintain the attention of small children. Develop and implement literacy skills in preparation for successful future elementary education. Work with disadvantaged children who read below grade level. Provide tutoring on content and grammar for various assignments. Assist English as second language (ESL) students with intensive literacy instruction. Provide intensive literacy instruction to children where low literacy is a potential barrier to academic success. Minimum Qualifications Enrolled in a degree‑seeking program at UNM, enrolling at least half‑time (6 hours) for fall and spring semesters (audit hours do not count). If participating in Work‑Study, you must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress. Preferred Qualifications Enjoy working with children. Enthusiastic about reading out loud with a strong, loud voice.
