Seasonal Maintenance Worker (Historic Preservation) Positions may be filled for a six‑month seasonal period and can vary due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Responsibilities This position is responsible for providing building and grounds maintenance for a National Park Service site with diversified infrastructure and operational complexity. Duties include: Assisting journeyman or higher‑level employees with masonry, carpentry, and mixing soils, water, and amendments for mortar; implementing preservation treatments such as capping, veneering, re‑pointing, resetting, and new laying; and maintaining historic structures, foundations, and contemporary buildings, trail and road drainage structures, etc. Eligibility and Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males. Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program participation required. Government quarters or housing may be required depending on location. Uniform required; allowance provided. Work may include on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, shift work, overnight travel, and travel authorities. Training, travel & purchase authority, and vehicle operation may be required. Valid driver's license and motor‑vehicle records required. Applicants must be at least 16 years old (or 18) and meet education or training qualifications as listed. Qualifications To qualify, candidates must have knowledge and ability in the following areas: Standard maintenance work at normal supervision. Interpretation of instructions, specifications, and blueprints. Use and maintenance of hand and power tools. Equipment assembly, installation, and repair. Material knowledge and technical practices. Use of measuring instruments. Experience in carpentry, masonry, roofing, and painting. Applicants should provide detailed experience and training in resume, avoiding reliance solely on job titles. Volunteer Experience Volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations is credited with qualifying experience. Physical Effort Heavy to moderate effort required: lifting or handling objects up to 50 lb unassisted; working while standing, stooping, bending, crouching, and climbing in uncomfortable positions; occasional work beneath buildings in cramped and dark areas. Working Conditions Work occurs at prehistoric and historic structures and ruins, often in backcountry requiring rappelling, scaffolding, and ladder systems. Tasks may be dusty, direct, and performed under adverse weather. Overnight travel and backpacking are required at Glen Canyon. Benefits Federal benefits are available.
