Course Overview

The Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE) is a clinical exam to assess whether candidates demonstrate the knowledge, skills and competence of a graduate-level nurse or midwife from an Australian Nursing and Midwifery Board (NMBA) approved program of study.

Our goal is to support nurses in meeting the requirements for Australian nursing registration, especially in preparation for the OSCE, an assessment with a high failure rate (60%) and significant costs per attempt.

Initial Requirements and Understanding NCLEX

(This has to be done by the Candidates themselves) – We can guide them with the process and details at the cost of $150)

NCLEX Examination Requirement
Before registering for the OSCE, candidates must pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX), a standardised test that evaluates the nursing knowledge required to practise safely in Australia.

  • Eligibility: Must be a registered nurse in the home country with a minimum of three years of clinical experience.
  • Timeframe: The NCLEX exam requires 3-6 months of preparation, depending on the candidate’s current knowledge level and study time.

Estimated Costs for NCLEX

  • Exam Fee: Approx. USD $200-300.
  • Preparation Materials: USD $100-200 (books, online resources).
  • Testing Center Fee: USD $150-200, based on location.

How to Register for NCLEX

  • Register on the official NCLEX website, providing proof of nursing experience and education credentials.
  • Upon approval, the candidate will receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) within 2-4 weeks.

Understanding the OSCE Exam for Australia

What is the OSCE?
The OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Exam) is a hands-on clinical assessment that evaluates practical skills, clinical decision-making, and bedside manner. Candidates must demonstrate competency in simulated clinical scenarios.

OSCE Exam Format

  • Multiple stations with simulated patient interactions.
  • Each station tests specific nursing skills and knowledge.
  • Candidates are evaluated on accuracy, communication, and patient safety.

Challenges of the OSCE

  • High Failure Rate: Approximately 60% fail rate, primarily due to inadequate preparation.
  • Cost: Approximate total cost is USD $5,000 per attempt, making preparation essential to avoid costly retakes.

The RN OSCE is the practical examination for internationally qualified registered nurses seeking registration in Australia as a registered nurse (RN). It consists of 10 stations (or clinical scenarios) that have been developed to test candidates against the NMBA Registered Nurse Standards for Practice.

The OSCE is run strictly to time being two minutes of reading time, and eight minutes of performance time allowed for each station. The OSCE is set at the entry to practice level that is expected of a registered nurse in Australia.
